Do you kneed to wear a tampon swimming on your period?

my friend does swimming every day and when she has her period she doesn't use anything and she says nothing comes out is that true?? because am going on holiday tomorrow and i have my period it is quite weak and i don't know what to do i just had a shower and it doesn't come out straight away after??? xx thanks
